We thought we’d share some tips based on actual experiences to help you make things easier when designing custom jewelry.
Tip # 1
Ring size seems simple, but it's amazing how many people give us the wrong one.
Time, weight gain and loss can change finger size.
So can having children. Sizing or remaking a ring costs time and money.
Wide bands or rings probably should be a made half size larger so it’s easier to put on and take off.
Tip # 2
We need the actual size of stones in millimeters before creating a CAD. Even two stones of the same carat weight cut may be slightly different sizes. Pear, Princess, Marquis, Trapezoid, Radiant, Emerald or any other fancy shape requires even more dimensions, as do stones with cut corners.
If you have a GIA, IGI or other certificate, send or email us a copy.
If the stone requires a snug fit into the setting, especially if it’s an irregular shape, send us the stone for a Sarine scan that integrates into the CAD for a perfect fit.
Tip #3
Customers change their minds. One customer wants a row of diamonds added to the shank, or a halo, or a different stone shape.
If a CAD was created, it has to be modified. If the item was already cast, it has to be recast.
Your customer needs to understand that changes may take additional time, and possibly expense.
Tip # 4
“I love my old ring, I want my new one to be exactly like it, only this time I don’t want the stone to fall out/break.”
If there is a structural flaw, repeating the same design will have the same result. Modifications in materials, design and production may have to be made.
We will work with you and your customer to arrive at a safe design they’ll love.
For clients with injuries or arthritis who can no longer comfortably put on or take of their rings, an expandable ring shank is the answer.
Tip # 5
The manufacturing is more complex in a mixed metal combination, such as gold with platinum. One-piece CADs become two or three-piece CADs, one casting becomes two or three, and the pieces that have to be joined. That has to be added to the price you tell your customer.
Tip #6
The vast majority of diamonds, Lab Grown diamonds, and colored stones are cut to standard sizes.
We recently had a customer who wanted a 5 x 1.5 x 1 mm baguettes, but no one would create them. We were able to supply a 5 x 2 mm.
Another customer wanted a 3 mm Morganite of intense pink color, which isn’t possible for a pale pink stone.
If it is possible to cut or recut a stone to the desired proportions, we’ll get it done through our prime sources.
Tip # 7
Not every stone is as hard as a diamond, which is a 10 on the Mohs Scale. A sapphire or ruby is a 9, still hard and strong.
When it comes to emeralds, opals, topaz, and other stones, they may only be a 6.5, or even less, vulnerable to being scratched or broken. This must be taken into consideration when designing the setting to be as safe and strong as possible to avoid problems.
Tip # 8
To avoid surprises once a piece is finished, we make sure your customer will know exactly what their piece will look like BEFORE.
We can start with a hand drawing.
Or a CAD, either created for them, or one from our extensive archives.
If they can’t judge from the CAD, we can create a CAD rendering that looks like a photograph of their piece.
If your customer still needs to see more, we can provide a hard resin for them to carefully try on.
If that still doesn’t work, we can make a silver/CZ version of their piece they can try on, and even use as travel jewelry.
Tip # 8
“I want the wedding band to exactly fit next to this antique/heirloom/unique engagement ring.”
If a straight band won’t work, the best way to ensure they fit precisely together is to give us the ring.
If a customer won't give up the ring, it requires taking lots of pictures and measurements of the piece from every angle.
We can create a hard resin for your client to try on to make sure the old and new rings fit well together, making any changes needed before the ring is cast.
If a bracelet is missing a link or needs a damaged one replaced, we can create a High Resolution scan of the existing link(s) to replicate it. Or scan an earring to recreate its lost mate, either identical to the lost one, or as a mirror image.
We can also duplicate an heirloom when there’s more than one heir.
